Father Charged With Shooting 11-Year-Old Daughter in the Face

Investigators say the little girl could suffer paralysis as a result of her injuries

A Camden County father has been charged with critically injuring his 11-year-old daughter after he allegedly shot her in the face, according to police.

Investigators say it happened around 9:30 p.m. Thursday when Byaer Johnson, 27, went to visit the little girl at her home on the 1300 block of Thurman Street in Camden. Police say Johnson suddenly pulled out a handgun and placed it on the floor. When he was asked to leave, investigators say Johnson picked up the gun and shot the child in the face.

Police say Johnson then pointed the gun at another man in the home and pulled the trigger, but the weapon jammed. Investigators say the 28-year-old man wrestled with Johnson, moved the gun away from him, and hit him several times. Police say the man then fired the gun at Johnson striking him in the buttocks.

Police found Johnson running toward the Ivy Hill apartment complex in Camden and took him into custody. He is charged with Criminal Attempted Murder and other weapons offenses.

The 11-year-old is in critical but stable condition at Cooper Medical Center. Authorities say she could suffer paralysis as a result of her injuries.
