Shooting Leaves 13-Year-Old Dead on Camden Sidewalk

A 13-year-old boy became Camden's first homicide victim of the year as gunfire rang out overnight.

Camden County Police arrived on the 2900 hundred block of Line Street, near Beacon Avenue, arround 11:15 p.m. to find Nathaniel Plummer Jr. lying on the sidewalk. He was rushed to Cooper University Hospital where the teenager died about an hour later.

Nathaniel's mother, Taisha Mercado, tells the Courier-Post of Cherry Hill that he wanted to be a basketball player when he grew up.

She says through tears, "He was just a baby."

Police didn’t immediately know a motive nor did they reveal any suspects in the case.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Camden County Prosecutor’s Office Det. Pete Longo at (856) 580-5854 or police Det. Gordon Harvey at (856) 757-7420 or email prosecutors.

Camden, a city of 77,000 residents across the Delaware River from Philadelphia, is among the most impoverished in the nation and has long struggled with crime. Thirty-two people were killed in the city last year.
