Calling All Veterans with Military Tattoos

Photographer is looking for area vets to be featured in new book

Veterans with tattoos can have their photos taken at the Battleship New Jersey on Saturday.

The call went out for volunteers to participate in a book project by Philadelphia photojournalist Kyle Cassidy.

The book, “War Paint,” will feature body art on members of the military, past and present, from all branches of the service.

Cassidy has been traveling across the country for the last two years taking pictures and collecting stories from American veterans. He said a way to pay tribute to those who serve and sacrifice.

One of the servicemen,“Wild” Bill Guarnere, told Cassidy how he and his buddy wound up getting tattoos in Scotland after D-Day. He served with the U.S. Army Easy Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division from 1942 to 1945.

Guarnere said his tattoo of a paratrooper was done after a weekend pass to London found him and some new U.S. Air Force friends flying over to Edinburgh. Another tattoo of a cross was done to honor his brother who was killed in Italy.

Cassidy said the book is scheduled to come out from Schiffer Books in the fall. He’s working to get his final photos to the editor sometime in August.

“Anybody with a tattoo related to military service who can make it there, I’ll photograph,” said Cassidy.

He’s prepared to take as many photos between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday as time permits.
