Two Brothers Shot, One Fatally, in Gunfire at Parking Lot of Atlantic County, N.J., Mall

Numerous shell casings littered the ground in the pre-dawn hours of Black Friday.

Nearby lay a baseball cap and a Macy's bag. A bullet hole could be seen in a sport utility vehicle parked all alone in the parking lot of the Hamilton Mall in Atlantic County, New Jersey, the scene of overnight gunfire.

Two brothers were shot, authorities said about eight hours after the 1 a.m. shooting. Demond Cottman, a 21-year-old from Atlantic City, died from multiple gunshot wounds. Shadi Cottman, 26, of Clayton, New Jersey, was in stable condition at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center with a gunshot wound to a leg.

Police did not release a motive in the shooting or how many others were involved. Officers arrived at the mall parking lot following a 9-1-1 call of a shooting.

More than 20 police evidence markers littered the parking lot of the closed mall, which did open as scheduled at 6 a.m. The shooting took place outside the Macy's store at the mall on Black Horse Pike.

Earlier this year Demond Cottman was arrested for obstruction of justice for a shooting in the Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, but released on a summons.

This is a developing story. Check back for more details as they become known.
