Brother Struck in Bergen County Hit-and-Run Dies

Michael Viruet, who had his leg amputated after being struck in a hit-and-run crash in North Jersey, has died.

Michael Viruet was 20 years old. His leg had to be amputated as a result of the Nov. 14 crash.

Viruet and his 11-year-old brother, Adrian, had just seen a movie and were walking toward a pedestrian bridge when an SUV jumped a curb in North Bergen, striking both of them, and took off.

The Hudson County Sheriff's Office has been searching for the driver, Rogelio Chavix-Tacen. He was last seen in Fairview.

Authorities say he had purchased tickets to return to his native Guatemala but never boarded the plane.

Chavix-Tacen initially faced charges of aggravated vehicular assault and leaving the scene of an accident.
