In Major League Baseball — the only major professional sports league without a salary cap — spending big bucks on players doesn't always translate to wins.
Take the Philadelphia Phillies.
The Phillies ranked ninth in the league in payroll at the start of the season, at $135.8 million, but they have the worst record with just 29 wins. That works out to about $2.6 million per win. Only the Los Angeles Dodgers have spent more per win, but they are in first place.
