Supermarket Closings Put Hundreds of Jobs on the Line

Over 500 A&P employees may lose their jobs as 10 supermarkets close.

Over 500 A&P supermarket employees may soon be looking for work as bankruptcy restructuring closes three Pathmark and seven Superfresh stores within the next two months.

According to representatives of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union, workers received the news Thursday morning from union and company officials. Closing these stores will result the loss of hundreds of union jobs including about 240 meat cutters and 265 clerks, said The Inquirer.

According to The Inquirer, Superfresh and Pathmark stores across Southeastern Pennsylvania, Northern Delaware and South Jersey are closing as a result of A&P filing for Chapter 11 protection in December.

The Inquirer reports the closure will affect Pathmarks in Deptford, Saucon Valley, Glasgow, Delaware, and near Lehigh University. The closures will also affect Super Fresh stores in Hamilton Township, Mount Holly, Hammonton, Cape May Court House, Hightstown, Yardley and Lionville, union officials said.

Brian String, president of UFCW Local 152, was not very optimistic.

“I am not convinced they have a turnaround strategy in place. Furthermore, I do believe there will be more store closings coming, as well,” he said.
