Bail Set at $1M for Slaying Suspect

Bail has been set at $1 million for a northern New Jersey man accused in the shooting death of another man on a Plainfield street late last year.

Union County prosecutors announced Saturday that 22-year-old Plainfield resident Lavarr Nowell faces murder and weapons charges stemming from the Dec. 3 shooting of 21-year-old Dawud Hicks.

Hicks was found by police who had responded to reports of shots fired in the 300 block of Manson Place.

The Plainfield resident, who had been shot "multiple times," died a short time later at a hospital.

Prosecutors say Nowell was charged Friday at the Union County Jail, where he's serving a sentence on an unrelated criminal matter.

It wasn't known Saturday if he has retained an attorney in the murder case.
