Avalon, Stone Harbor Beaches Getting Sand Boost

Officials announce beach fill project on Seven Mile Island

A barrier island in Cape May County that links two popular Jersey shore towns will be getting more sand as part of a massive forthcoming beach fill project.

Avalon Mayor Martin Pagliughi announced that the project will repair damage that Seven Mile Island sustained during a winter storm last January and a nor'easter in October 2015.

Sand for the project will be dredged from nearby Townsend's Inlet. Borough officials say the beach fill is poised to be one of the largest in Avalon's history.

Fill work will begin in neighboring Stone Harbor at the end of January and is expected to take about four weeks. Once that work is completed, sand will then be hydraulically pumped from the inlet to Avalon's north end beaches from 9th Street to 38th Street. [[238427591, C]]
