Bethlehem Teen Dies After Collapsing in Class

A Bethlehem teenager collapsed in class Thursday and died.

"We are so heartbroken for his family," Liberty High School principal JoAnne Durante told The Morning Call.

Juanya Spady, 16, was in English class around 10:30 a.m. and collapsed in his seat. School nurses were called right away and they performed CPR on Spady until emergency crews arrived.

The teenager was rushed to St. Luke's and pronounced dead about an hour later.

"Today was a rough day, [but] Liberty is a family, a very tight family. We put kids first; we always have," Durante said, talking about how her staff quickly stepped in to try and help Juanya.

An autopsy was being performed Friday to determine what killed Spady.

The school brought in counselors the next day to help the school students and community cope.
