Attempted Sexual Assault in Port Richmond

Police say the attempted attack happened before the sun had set on Tuesday.

Philadelphia police are searching for the man they say tried to sexually assault a 17-year-old female as she walked down the street in the Port Richmond section of the city Tuesday evening.

The alleged attempted attack happened on the 3000-block of Salmon Street around 7:30.

Police say a knife-wielding man approached the victim, who was wearing headphones, but was scared off by a barking dog.

The man fled the scene, according to authorities.

Now, the neighborhood is on high alert.

“I’ll be 17 in August. It could have been me,” says Port Richmond resident Alisha Herman. “You just got to be street smart around here – all neighborhoods.”

Police describe the suspect as muscular black man between the ages of 30 and 40 with a light beard. They say the man was wearing a dark hooded shirt with a gold zipper, jeans and tan boots.

Anyone with information is urged to call the Special Victims Unit at 215-685-325.
