Atlantic City Mourns the Loss of Former Mayor, Senator

Atlantic City's former mayor and state senator has been remembered for serving the city.

A memorial service for former mayor and state Senator Jim Whelan was held in Boardwalk Hall on Thursday. The Democrat died of a heart attack last month at the age of 68.

Whelan was a teacher in Atlantic City and served as the city's mayor while the city prospered as a casino destination. He was elected to the state Assembly in 2006 and later was a state senator when casinos closed because of competition.

Lawmakers announced on Wednesday a bill would soon be introduced to rename Boardwalk Hall after Whelan.
