Woman Drowns at Jersey Shore Beach

UPDATE: Officials now say the woman is still alive. New details here.

A woman drowned at an Atlantic City beach after she apparently was caught in a rip current.

The Press of Atlantic City reports that city firefighters and the Atlantic City Beach Patrol were called to South Carolina beach around 7 p.m. Monday, where a woman was face down in the water about 150 to 200 yards off shore.

Beach Patrol Chief Rod Aluise says lifeguards brought in the unconscious woman but were unable to revive her. Her identity was not immediately known.

Lifeguards at that beach go off duty at 6 p.m. Signs warn swimmers to enter the water only when a lifeguard is present. Some beaches have lifeguards until 8 p.m.

"It's another one of those after-hour tragedies," Aluise told the paper. "Everybody's upset. It's a terrible tragedy."
