Atlantic City Gives Initial Approval to Plan to Sell Airport

Atlantic City lawmakers have given initial approval to a proposal to sell its airport as part of a plan to avoid a state takeover.

The City Council voted 5-4 on Wednesday to approve the first reading of a plan to sell Bader Field to the city's Municipal Utilities Authority for $110 million. A final vote must still be held, and the state must also give its approval.

The council will also vote on new labor agreements with its seven worker unions and consider the privatization of payroll services.

City officials have projected $72.9 million in savings from 2017 through 2021. Atlantic City has annual budget deficits of approximately $100 million before state aid.

Mayor Don Guardian has listed 26 items where the city either has or plans to cut costs and raise revenue.
