Army specialist, medic die in separate attacks

Two Philly-area soldiers died in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.

Pfc. David Jefferson died July 2 after he was injured from an insurgent attack in Afghanistan. An improvised explosive device went off while Jeffersonโ€™s unit was on patrol in Kandahar, said the Department of Defense.

Spc. Louis Fastuca died July 5 after insurgents attacked his vehicle in Abdulhamid Kalev, said the DOD. He was killed by an IED attack.

Jefferson, 23, was an Army Combat Medic assigned to the Armyโ€™s 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) in Fort Campbell, Ky., said MidlandsConnect.com.

The Philadelphia native leaves behind a wife and young son, MidlandsConnect added.

Fastuca, 24 was assigned to the Army's 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team out of Camp Ederle, Italy.
