Person Jumps Out Window to Escape Fire

A person jumped to safety after a fire broke out at a Wilmington apartment building early this morning.

The fire was reported around 1 a.m. Monday at the building on the 1400 block of N Claymont Street. One resident jumped from the second floor to escape the blaze, but was not hurt.

It took about three dozen firefighters an hour to control the fire and officials say luckily no one was injured.

City Battalion Chief Michael Schaal says 10 residents, from eight separate units, were displaced by the fire and one is being assisted by the American Red Cross.

The cause and origin of the fire is under investigation.

This was one of a handful of overnight fires around the region. In Pottsville, Pa., a father, his four children and another relative died when flames tore through their home.
