Alligator Found During Drug Bust

A "heroin operation" is busted Wednesday in Darby Borough

A unusual find during a drug bust Wednesday in Darby Borough.

Nine bags of suspected heroin, cash, a semi-automatic gun, a pitbull and an alligator were discovered at a home on the 1100 block of Main Street in Darby, according to police.

The bust was the result of a two month investigation by Darby Borough Police.

"First time I've ever seen an alligator in Darby.. 41 years, first time I've seen one," Police Chief Robert Smythe said at a news conference.

Police believe the pitbull and alligator may have been used as a type of security.

Four people have been arrested in connection with the "heroin operation," according to police.

Authorities say the people involved in the operation were drug wholesalers, who were distributing to dealers, Smythe said.

Police are still searching for the alleged ringleader, John Pratt.

The pitbull has been turned over to animal control.

Darby Police called the Philadelphia Zoo about the two-and-a-half foot alligator. They are waiting to hear back.
