Fire Closes Allentown Elementary School

A fire caused a Pennsylvania school district to close an elementary school Tuesday morning.

The blaze broke out around 7:15 a.m. inside Cleveland Elementary School along Ninth Street in Allentown, said Allentown dispatchers.

Several teachers and administrators, but no students, were in the building when the fire started.

No injuries were reported. Firefighters said they limited the bulk of the damage to a second floor teacher preparation room.

School officials said the fire also caused significant smoke damage to the second floor. They haven't said when the school will reopen.

Cleveland is one of 15 elementary schools in Allentown. It opened as a school house in 1883 and was used as a day care from 1981-1984 before reopening as an elementary school. It's named for President Grover Cleveland.
