Authorities say a police officer working a DWI checkpoint escaped serious injury when an alleged drunken driver crashed into his parked police cruiser.
Elmwood Park police tell The Record that the accident occurred around 4 a.m. Sunday on Route 46 westbound.
Officer Christopher Finn was sitting in the cruiser when it was rear-ended by a car driven by 23-year-old borough resident John McCarthy. Finn suffered minor injuries and was treated at a hospital, while McCarthy apparently was not injured.
McCarthy was charged with assault by auto and also received several motor vehicle citations.
A telephone number for McCarthy could not be located Sunday, and it was not known if he had retained a lawyer.
