New Jersey Activists Rally Outside Statehouse to Legalize Marijuana

Dozens of activists and community members gathered at the steps of the New Jersey Statehouse to show their support for legalizing marijuana.

Several speakers urged the crowd to push state and federal lawmakers to legalize or decriminalize marijuana.

They also called for reforms to drug sentencing laws, which they claim unfairly target minorities, and called on Gov. Chris Christie to stop β€œinterfering” with the state's medical marijuana program and instead do what he can to help patients.

Published reports said more than 250 people took part in the rally, including medical marijuana advocates and those who want the drug legalized.

The event culminated with many participants publicly smoking marijuana. A handful of state troopers were monitoring the event, but it did not appear that any arrests were made.
