ACLU: Arrest Was Racially Motivated

The American Civil Liberties Union has sued a white Pittsburgh police officer on behalf of a black teacher who claims he was wrongly arrested for commenting on the officer's driving.

The Allegheny County district attorney advised police to drop charges including disorderly conduct and resisting arrest against the teacher, 38-year-old Dennis Henderson.

Henderson had just left a community group meeting that addressed community-police relations when Officer Jonathan Gromek stopped after hearing Henderson criticize his driving. The incident happened June 26 and Henderson was jailed for about 12 hours following his arrest.

Gromek was pulled off patrol duty while the city's Office of Municipal Investigations reviewed the incident.

Gromek could not immediately be reached for comment, but city police spokeswoman Diane Richard says OMI "sustained" the allegations against the officer - meaning they were found to be true.
