A Hike in NJ Gas Tax?

The chairman of the state Senate's Budget Committee says New Jersey should increase the gas tax to fund its transportation needs.

Sen. Paul Sarlo says a new revenue source is needed so the state can adequately invest in infrastructure.

Sarlo, a Democrat, criticized Gov. Chris Christie's administration for failing to follow its own pay-go transportation plan.

"All we've done is borrow, borrow, borrow," Sarlo said before Tuesday's hearing on Christie's proposed budget for the fiscal year that starts July 1.

The Legislature's budget expert told the panel that revenue collections have fallen short of the administration's projections for three straight years.

The budgets then had to be rebalanced late in the fiscal year.
