Small Yorkshire Terrier Recovering After Being Found in Closed Container During Heat Wave

The dog, named 'Gertie' by workers, was found outside the Pennsylvania SPCA’s Erie Avenue headquarters in Philadelphia on Sunday

A Yorkshire terrier is recovering after being found abandoned and inside a covered plastic container while temperatures were more than 90 degrees over the weekend.

The dog, named “Gertie” by workers, was found outside the Pennsylvania SPCA’s Erie Avenue headquarters in Philadelphia on Sunday. Officials said she was left inside a plastic container with the lid on.

An SPCA volunteer spotted the container and opened it, finding Gertie inside. The dog was covered with fleas and a coating of flea dirt.

SPCA workers said they named the dog Gertie because the name Gertrude means “spear of strength.” They also said she is “spunky and strong” despite the condition she was found in.

If you would like to donate to Gertie’s care and help her find a new family, visit the Pennsylvania SPCA Facebook page.
