Next year, a half-acre patch of a Kent County soybean field will likely be ramps for an intersection of Route 1, but in recent weeks workers have been sifting through the soil looking for pieces of Delaware history.
They have turned up shards of red clay pottery, fragments of a tea set, shoe buckles and other artifacts at the "Little Heaven Project." The effort has been orchestrated by the Delaware Department of Transportation through $400,000 in federal funds. Archaeologists hope to learn more about the people who worked the farmstead they've dated to 1750, an early date for settlement in the area.
DelDOT archaeologist David Clarke called the site a "time capsule" that gives a very detailed look at a specific time period.
