A Pennsylvania man has been sentenced to three to 23 months in jail for bringing an assault rifle to a western Pennsylvania foundry after he was suspended from work for three days.
Twenty-eight-year-old Matthew D. Smith, of Greensburg, was suspended from work on May 22. Later that morning he showed up at the Perma-Cast building in Penn Township with an AK-47 assault rifle and a handgun. That's about 20 miles east of Pittsburgh.
Smith allegedly told employees to leave and surrendered to authorities the next day. No injuries were reported.
At his sentencing Wednesday, Smith received credit for time he's already served in jail. That means he can be paroled immediately, but Westmoreland County Judge Alfred Bell ordered that Smith first undergo a mental health evaluation.
