Worker Killed in Sewer Accident

A worker has been killed when he was pinned beneath a large piece of concrete while helping install the first-ever sewer system in a tiny southwestern Pennsylvania borough.

State police say 32-year-old Jared Ritchey, of Everett, died at the scene when a concrete manhole form fell on him in Ursina, Somerset County. The borough is about 50 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.

The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating, which is routine in workplace fatalities.

Police didn't immediately identify the contracting company Ritchey was working for at the time.

Troopers from the Somerset barracks say Ritchey's co-workers worked to save him by having a crane lift off the concrete and by performing CPR before paramedics arrived.

The accident happened about 2:10 p.m. Ritchey was formally pronounced dead about 90 minutes later.
