Woman With Shovel Chases After Burglar: Police

A pair of alleged thieves is behind bars after police say watchful neighbors caught them in the act.

Police say a woman was gardening outside her home on County Line Road in Radnor, Pa. around 10 a.m. Suddenly, police say, she heard a noise coming from her neighbor’s yard.

When she went to investigate, she spotted a woman with a pillow case in her hand running out of the home. Officials say the neighbor picked up a shovel and chased after her. The suspect allegedly jumped into a getaway car which then fled the scene.

Police say another neighbor quickly alerted 911 and described the car to investigators. Police were able to track down the vehicle at Matsonford Road a short time later. Police say they arrested the woman as well as her male accomplice.

Police say they could not confirm the actual identities of the suspects because they go by several different aliases. They also say the male suspect doesn’t speak any English though they have not yet confirmed where he and the female suspect are from originally.

The duo is wanted for several burglaries across the country, mainly in New Jersey and New York City, according to police. Investigators say the vehicle they used during Tuesday’s burglary was a rental car with Virginia license plates. They are currently investigating whether they’re responsible for a dozen other burglaries in the Radnor area within the past month.

As for the woman who tried to chase them down, while police admire her bravery, they also warn people not to take matters into their own hands when they witness a crime.

“We’re very grateful for those citizens and their diligence,” said Lieutenant Christopher Flanagan. “But we do not ask any citizen to go past an observation, relaying information to a 911 center for obvious safety reasons.”
