Woman Found Dead on Side of Road

Investigators believe woman may have been hit by a bus

A woman was found dead on the side of a Cumberland County road Wednesday night and investigators say a bus could be at fault.

Investigators tell NBC10 Jersey Shore Bureau reporter Ted Greenberg that they are trying to determine if Bernadette Montgomery, 54, was run over by a bus that she had just exited or if she was hit by another vehicle after getting off the bus.

Montgomery's body was found near McCormick Place and Orange Street in Bridgeton, N.J. around 6:30 p.m. last night, according to Bridgeton Police.

Police said they found tire skid marks nearby.

Montgomery, of New Castle, Del., was a grandmother. Her brother, James Williamson, describes his sister as someone with a warm and joyful spirit.

"When my nephew tried to contact his mother and a detective answered, I knew that was a bad sign,” said Williamson.

The investigation into the deadly crash continues and no one has been charged in the case.

β€œWe’ve narrowed down pretty much 90 percent of the vehicle traffic that went through there at the time. We have spoken to most of those drivers and we have examined most of the vehicles that went through,” said Capt. Michael Gaimari, Bridgeton Police.

"We’re really devastated right now. We really want to know what happened," said Claude Evans, friend.

An autopsy is expected to be completed on Friday.
