Woman Calls 911 After Being Shot in Northeast Philadelphia Bedroom

The motive for the shooting along a quiet Northeast Philadelphia street isn't clear

A woman awoken by noises outside her home was shot multiple times as she returned to bed overnight in her home along a quiet Northeast Philadelphia street.

The 58-year-old woman managed to call 911 despite being shot in her abdomen and chest inside her home along the 8500 block of Summerdale Avenue in the Rhawnhurst neighborhood around 12:30 a.m. Saturday, Philadelphia Police Capt. George Fuchs said.

The woman was transferred to a Center City hospital in stable condition.

The woman had heard something outside and noticed that a screen had been opened so she closed it and laid back down, police said. She then heard shots and realized she had been hit, Fuchs said.

The window she looked out looks downward so it’s likely the shooter or shooters would have had to stand on something to shoot in, Fuchs said.

No one made entry into the home.

No surveillance cameras are in the area, which police call a quiet, residential neighborhood.

The victim works as a security guard at a courthouse but had no previous issues that would draw attention or give reason for her to be targeted, Fuchs said.
