Woman Shot, Killed, Ex-Husband Charged

The shooting happened in Glassboro Monday night.

A New Jersey man is in police custody after he allegedly shot and his ex-wife in her Glassboro home, according to authorities.

Glassboro Police say they were called to a home on Sherwood Lane around 10:20 Monday night to find a Rita Sawyer, 53, dead.

They say she died of a gunshot wound to the head.

About an hour and a half later, investigators arrested the victim's ex-husband, Charles Sawyer, 58, for her murder after a brief foot chase in Salem County.

Charles is charged with first -degree murder and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose after police found a gun near where he was caught.

Authorities say the couple divorced in 2004, but that Rita had complained to police that her ex was stalking and harassing her less than a week ago.

The couple have two children. Neither are living in the Sherwood Lane home and no one else was in the home at the time of the murder.

Charles Sawyer's bail is set at $750,000 cash.
