Woman Grateful After Strangers Take Down Purse Snatcher

Suspect beat up elderly woman for purse, but didn't get far

The bruises and broken bag show Mary Breslin's struggle with Brandon Gooding Tuesday afternoon.

"He threw me to the ground and he kicked me. And that's why I'm all black and blue," the 73-year-old woman said.

Delaware State Police say Gooding, 28, knocked Mary down and stole her purse after she withdrew money from an ATM outside of a bank in Wilmington.

Police believe before the attack Gooding was inside the bank looking for a victim.

"I wouldn't give up the purse until finally the straps broke," Mary said. "He pulled so hard and then he started to run over the grassy spot there and all of a sudden these wonderful men came."

Karim Mounir wasted no time taking off after Gooding and quickly brought him down.

"When I was closer to him there, I pushed my legs under his feet and he fell down," he said.

Carlos Rivera, who works at a nearby liquor store, and two other men followed.

"The idiot kept saying…the guy kept saying 'I'm sorry, I'm sorry! Can you guys let me go? I won't ever do it again.' And we're like 'Are you kidding me?'" Rivera said.

Mary is just grateful she's not seriously hurt. She calls the men who helped her angels from heaven.

"These men -- I don't know them at all and yet they were willing to fight for me. And that's really being a Good Samaritan," she said.

As for the suspect, he's behind bars on $36,000 cash bail. He's facing charges of robbery and assault.
