Police are investigating the death of a 51-year-old woman after her decomposing body was found inside her Chester County apartment.

Investigators discovered the woman’s body in her apartment on the 2700 block of Madison in Chester around 9:16 a.m. Family members asked police to check on her after they did not hear from her. Police went to the apartment and detected a strong odor coming from inside.

A police source tells NBC10 that the woman was an Air Force veteran and had been suffering from several medical conditions. She was last seen alive on Saturday, according to authorities.

Investigators took the woman’s son into custody on a probation violation stemming from a forgery arrest in Darby Township. Police say they are not sure why he did not report her death and are calling him a person of interest in the case.

Police have not released the woman’s identity.
