Mercer County prosecutors say a woman called 911 on Friday night and said the man, 42-year-old Gary Boyd Sr., was her estranged husband and was texting her. While she was on the phone, Boyd showed up and began stabbing himself.

Prosecutor Angelo Onofri tells the Times of Trenton that the woman ran to a neighbor's home and Boyd followed her and again stabbed himself.

Police arrived and asked Boyd to drop the knife but instead he brandished it and an officer began firing.

Onofri says Boyd was pronounced dead early Saturday after emergency surgery.

The officers are on administrative leave, and the shooting is being investigated. An autopsy is scheduled for this week.
