Patrons watched as a goose died after it got pulled between two conveyor belts on a ride at New Jersey's Six Flags Great Adventure amusement park.

Nicole Cora of Southington, Conn., tells the Asbury Park Press operators stopped the belt along the Congo Rapids ride the bird landed Sunday. But the goose wouldn't budge.

Cora says the bird stayed after the belt was restarted and that people watched in horror as the animal struggled beneath the belts. Cora tells the paper the Six Flags staff failed to turn off the belt before the goose was pulled between the ride’s conveyor belts.

An amusement park spokeswoman tells NBC10 that patrons would have been put at risk if the operator had used an emergency stop:

Here is there statement, verbatim:

Yesterday, staff members safely relocated several dozen geese from the Congo Rapids ride area.  One, however, became caught in the water current.  Ride operators determined that the ride's emergency stop would have put guests at risk, so they made the decision to continue operating until all guests could be safely unloaded from the ride.

Our conservation efforts at Six Flags Wild Safari demonstrate our commitment to nature and wildlife, and our staff was saddened by the loss.  Since safety is our No. 1 priority, we continually review our policies and procedures.  We determined that the situation was handled properly, although it is very unfortunate that a goose was lost.

The Asbury Park Press reports Cora and other riders complained to the park’s guest relations department. Cora also claims she notified New Jersey’s animal protection services.
