Wilmington Gets Extension to Accept $1.8M Police Grant

Wilmington has until next month to decide whether to accept a $1.8 million federal grant for community policing.

The News Journal of Wilmington reports the grant from the Department of Justice was awarded in early October and is awaiting the approval of Mayor Dennis P. Williams.

Williams' spokesman Gary Fullman says they're going to leave the acceptance decision to Mayor-elect Mike Purzycki, who will be sworn in Jan. 3.

A DOJ representative told The News Journal on Wednesday that the department will extend the acceptance deadline from Dec. 29 to Jan. 20.

The $1,875,000 grant would fund the salaries of 15 community police officers for three years with a 25 percent match required from the city at first. The city's contribution would need to increase by 25 percent annually.
