Wilmington Firefighters Avoid Layoffs

The new contract does not include raises and it eliminates two holidays.

The Wilmington City Council has approved a contract for city firefighters that does not include a raise but avoids layoffs.

In the contract approved Thursday, the union agreed to eliminate two holidays _ Lincoln's Birthday and Columbus Day. The city's non-union employees were already required to give up those holidays.

Under the contract, which ends on June 30, 2012, the union agreed to make higher contributions for health and dental coverage offered to individual officers and their families.
