Philadelphia Driver Commits Suicide During Traffic Stop: Police

State police say they're conducting an internal investigation after a motorist shot himself while being pulled over in northeastern Pennsylvania.

Troopers at the Wyoming barracks say an officer stopped 22-year-old Emmanuel Giddings Jr., of Philadelphia, about 10:30 p.m. Friday. Police say that happened because Giddings was driving erratically on the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Bear Creek Township, near Wilkes-Barre.

The trooper who stopped Giddings had asked him to get out of the car so the trooper could determine whether Giddings was intoxicated, but he reportedly pulled a gun and shot himself in the head.

Trooper Tom Kelly, a police spokesman, says the investigation is meant to determine whether Giddings was in police custody at the time and to clear the troopers who stopped Giddings.
