Wildwood May Get a Little Wilder

Patrons at Wildwood bars may get an extra hour of boozing this summer

The “wild” in Wildwood may ring truer this summer, as the City Commission considers an extension of bar hours in August and September.

The proposed ordinance was introduced Wednesday night and, if successful, means that Wildwood bars would be open until 4 a.m. during the last two months of summer, on a trial basis, reports the Press of Atlantic City.

The existing city ordinance requires that all bars stop selling alcohol between 3 a.m. and 7 a.m. It also states that everybody has to be out of the bars by 3:30 a.m., reports the Press of Atlantic City.

Bar owners spoke to the commission Wednesday, saying that limiting the sale of alcohol to 3 a.m. is hurting their businesses during the economic downfall.

"We're asking for some help to alleviate some pressure," said John Davis, of Luna Ristorante & Club at Garfield and Pacific avenues.
But not everyone thinks the extra hour of boozing is a great idea.

Commissioner Al Brannen said it would be "nothing but trouble" for the town, according to the Press of Atlantic City.

"We're never going to become a family resort if we have our bars open at 4 a.m.," Brannen said. "We're out of control in this town as it is."

A public hearing on the proposal will be held at the June 23 commission meeting.
