'Tis the season for getting candy but parents wouldn’t want some sweets recently found in the area winding up in their child’s Halloween candy haul.
The Chester County District Attorney’s Office announced Monday the seizure of 40 pounds of marijuana candy from an on-campus West Chester University apartment.
“With Halloween just around the corner, the last thing we want to see is drug-laced candy hitting the streets,” said Chief Deputy District Attorney Patrick Carmody. “This was good work by the police to pick off this load of drugs before it went to college students or kids.”
Prosecutors say that police zeroed in on the drugs when officers smelled marijuana coming from a parked car with students inside, which led to a series of tips that eventually landed officers at an apartment on S New Street where they made the bust on Oct. 20.
Inside officers found the drugs packed in dozens of baggies. The THC-laced candy came in many shapes, sizes and colors varying from small hard candies to ones the size of an orange, according to prosecutors.
Carmody told NBC10 that a 24-year-old student was the mastermind of the drugs and likely intended to hand out free samples of the candy to then sell product to users who wanted more. The alleged drug producer wasn't identified because he has yet to be formally charged. Carmody said he expects charges soon.

Carmody called the bust an “isolated incident” and said he believed officers seized all the weed treats involved. Carmody also does not believe the student intended to sell the drugs to children.
"The audience intended for these drugs was college-age and above," Carmody said.
While the student has not been charged, he has been suspended and kicked out of campus housing.
