Statue of George Washington Vandalized in Trenton

Someone has vandalized a statue of George Washington in New Jersey's capital city.

Trenton police are trying to determine who painted Washington's hands red during the Labor Day holiday weekend.

The statue stands on a pedestal in the city's Mill Hill Park and the hands are at least 20 feet above the street.

Resident Bernice Mitchell tells The Trentonian newspaper she believes someone climbed on the statue to reach the hands. She first noted the vandalism on Saturday.

The statue was cast in Italy and was displayed at the U.S. Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1876. Trenton purchased it in 1896.
