Villanova Student Helps Spread Egg Crack Challenge

In spirit of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, a new spin-off awareness campaign has gone viral and one Villanova University student has lead the way to help spread the word.

Maryland native Will Hauver, 22, created the Egg Crack Challenge to raise awareness for juvenile diabetes research before before he passed away six months later due to complications of the disease coupled with the stomach flu.

To help keep his memory alive, friend and Villanova senior Paige Kennedy has made it her mission to spread the word -- and the challenge -- in the hopes of finding a cure.

Kennedy has helped get the message out through a Hauver tribute video she createdg the Towson native cracking an egg on his forehead.

The campaign has already gone viral and has raised more than $63,000 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund, according to Kennedy.

Hauver's initial video reached 34 countries, Kennedy said.

In addition to local college sports teams, the campaign has also captured the attention of stars like Mario Lopez, Perez Hilton and "Today" correspondent Tamron Hall.

Juvenile diabetes, also known as Type-1 diabetes, is an unpreventable autoimmune disease that is not linked to diet or exercise.

The onset of the disease can occur at any age, affecting both children and adults.
