Water Main Break Causes Water to Back Up Into Northeast Philadelphia Homes

An 8-inch water main broke along a Northeast Philadelphia street Wednesday morning causing water to back up drains in nearby homes.

The break along the 100 block of Van Kirk Street in the city’s Summerdale section late Wednesday morning sent brown water into the street and caused part of the asphalt to break apart.

No reports of any injuries.

The Philadelphia Water Department rushed to the scene to address the issue as neighbors reported water coming up into tubs and sinks.

The break knocked out water to around 70 homes, said the water department. Crews were able to restore service and the street was reopened after several hours.
