Upper Darby Mom Leaves Kids Home Alone in Front Yard

The two boys were covered in dirt and bug bites, authorities say.

A mother is charged with child endangerment after police say she left her two children home alone in the yard of their Upper Darby home while she went to work on Mother's Day .

Police say the boys, ages 2 and 5, were found in the yard of the Snowden Road home covered in bug bites.

Authorities believe the boys were outside for nearly six hours before police arrived to an empty house -- empty except for mice and roaches.

"The living conditions were horrible. Period. Horrible. No human being should have to live in that type of filth,” Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood tells NBC10's Tim Furlong.

Police say the two-year-old's diaper looked like it hadn't been changed in days.

The boys were taken to Delaware County Hospital to be examined before they were turned over to Youth Services.

Their mom, Leiny Barrera-Sacreno, 26, was at work in Paoli when the children were found. She showed up at the police station to retrieve her children around 9 p.m. Sunday. She told police her cousin was supposed to be watching them that day.

Chitwood tells NBC10 that he doesn’t believe Barrera-Sacreno left the children in the care of any one. In fact, police believe the five-year-old was often left in charge of his younger brother.

The landlord of the house is there cleaning it out.

Barrera-Sacreno is free on bail. No word on whether her children have been returned to her.
