University of Delaware Goes Solar

University of Delaware has the oldest solar laboratory in the nation and now the university is taking the initiative to install an array of solar panels to the rooftops of buildings on campus, according to Delawareonline.com.

The online publication reports that the project on the largest part of the solar development – Delaware Field House -- is almost complete.

Upon completion of the entire solar panel installation, the university will save about $30K per year in energy cost making UD the largest solar-power generator in the state, leading the eco-friendly energy movement in the state, reports Delawareonline.

The project is only costing the University about $90K to improve the rooftops of the buildings while the supplier, Standard Solar, will compensate the price of the panels and installation and in return, the school will buy energy from the company -- at a discounted rate, of course.

Not only is the University of Delaware participating in the green-energy movement, so is Delaware Technical and Community College, Widener University and Wesley.

The initiative comes as a win-win for both the universities and project investors. Schools receive accreditation and lower energy cost while investors can receive a federal government tax credit, reports Delawareonline.

According to the online publication, students are so excited about the move to green energy that the class of 2009 gave the school solar panels as part of their senior gift.
