Benefits Dry Up for Jersey's Jobless

Unemployment benefits will run out for an estimated 33,000 New Jerseyans Friday. And it gets worse.Officials expect unemployment checks to dry up for another 3,500 to 4,000 out-of-work residents each week through the end of the year.
      
The state Human Services Department has alerted county welfare agencies and faith-based organizations to prepare for the influx.
      
If you're out-of-work and you haven't been eligible for food stamps, housing aid or utility assistance, you may now qualify.

In the Garden State, you can collect unemployment for up to 79 weeks. The maximum weekly benefit is $584, along with an additional $25 provided by federal stimulus dollars, according to The Star-Ledger.
      
People who are out of work are waiting for Congress to act on legislation that would extend unemployment benefits for likely another 13 weeks.
