Olympic soccer team continues dominance in 2-0 quarterfinals win over New Zealand

The United State Women’s National Team used a dominating performance Friday to defeat New Zealand 2-0 to advance to the semifinals of Olympic soccer.

Star striker Abby Wambach got the U.S. on the board in the 27th minute and substitute Sydney Leroux iced the game with an 87th-minute strike past Kiwi goalkeeper Jenny Bindon.

The Americans outshot the Kiwis seven to five.

Delran, N.J.’s Carli Lloyd missed the target on her two shot attempts and played sloppy at times committing four fouls as well as being hit with a yellow card in the 79th minute. Fellow Jersey girl Christie Rampone captained the U.S. and misfired on her only shot attempt.

Philly’s Heather Mitts and Pa. native Nicole Barnhart didn’t get in the game.

The Americans -- who are now guaranteed to at worst now play for bronze -- now await the winner of Great Britain and Canada in one of Monday’s semifinals.
