Woman, Child Killed in Frankford Blaze

Five others rescued, taken to hospital

A woman and a little boy were killed in an early morning fire in the Frankford section of Philadelphia Saturday morning. Two firefighters and five other people were also injured in the blaze, fire officials said.

The fire broke out at the three-story row home at 4340 Leiper St. around 7:30 a.m.  Within minutes, firefighters were on the scene, officials said.

The fire was heaviest on the second and third floors, according to officials.

One of the victims that was being treated for smoke inhalation is a one-year-old baby girl, who was at St. Christopher's Hospital in stable condition, said officials. The other victims were also brought to local area hospitals for treatment. Their conditions were unknown as of Saturday afternoon.

Firefighters were still looking for several residents connected to the residence.

Officials also were unable to find any working smoke alarms inside the home and are still looking for a cause of the fire, Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers told NBC 10 News.
