Pittsburgh Tribune Publisher Scaife Lauded at Memorial Service

The billionaire Mellon banking heir who published the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review and other western Pennsylvania newspapers has been remembered at a three-hour memorial attended by 200 friends, former employees and dignitaries.

Republican Gov. Tom Corbett, his Democratic challenger Tom Wolf and others gathered Sunday at the Rolling Rock Club in Ligonier to honor Richard Mellon Scaife. Scaife died July 4 at age 82.

At another memorial for Trib Total Media employees last week, former President Bill Clinton spoke fondly of Scaife as someone he befriended despite Scaife's previous opposition.

On Sunday the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports former Allegheny County executive Jim Roddey remembered the less public side of Scaife. Roddey remembered touring a Salvation Army soup kitchen with Scaife, who served food there.

After the visit, Roddey says Scaife gave the group "the largest check I have ever seen."
