Tree Falls on House, Kills Man

Authorities in northern New Jersey say a man has been struck and killed in his home by a tree that fell through the roof.

Hopatcong Police Lt. Thomas Kmetz tells The New Jersey Herald that the victim had been sitting in a recliner in his living room around 3:20 Thursday afternoon when a massive tree fell through the roof and fatally struck him.

Police say the man, whose name was not released, was in his early 60's.

Two dogs in the home were unharmed.

Kmetz says electrical wires brought down by the tree sparked a small fire.

A police officer who responded to the scene was treated at a nearby hospital for smoke inhalation.

Meteorologists say wind gusts in Hopatcong reached 35 mph Thursday.
