Trash Pickup Suspended Due to Snow

As trash continues to pile up in the streets and more snow approaches our area, the Philadelphia Streets Department suspended another trash pickup day.

"Due to the forecast snow accumulations, Sanitation trucks will have to be outfitted with plows to assist with snow operations," said Streets Department spokeswoman June Cantor. "As a result, Tuesday trash and recycling collections have been suspended. Residents with Tuesday as their collection day must set out their  materials next Tuesday, February 25."

Those whose Monday collections were not taken should leave them out to be picked up on Wednesday.

Collections for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday should be set out curbside on their regularly scheduled collection day

"Rear driveway pickups are still suspended for the week," Cantor said. "Materials must be set at the curb to be collected. During snow events, citizens should expect delays. Although crews are working to collect items, snow and ice can hamper their efforts. We regret this inconvenience and ask for patience as crews navigate through the snow and ice."

The Streets Department has the following tips for snow and ice management:

  • Apply commercial de-icer to your stairs and sidewalks early.
  • Allow extra time while driving and maintain safe driving distances
  • Do not throw snow back in the street.
  • Shovel a path of 36 inches (3ft.) within six hours of the end of a storm.
  • Use caution when navigating over bridges and overpasses where slippery spots may develop.
  • Residents should park their cars at least 20-ft. from street corners to allow our salt and plow trucks to turn the corners to treat all streets.
  • Check on your elderly neighbors and family.
